DIY Project of the month – February

The Every Kitchen Menu Board

The humble chalkboard – For decades it has been seen as a mundane educational tool, scrawled with messy algebra equations, sums and homework assignments and towering in the front of bored faces in classrooms across the world. But the days of the chalkboard being bound in endless maths periods is over. Today the chalkboard is making a comeback as a trendy decorative feature, gracing the walls and propped up outside the doors of hipster cafes across the globe.

So what better time to bring the chalkboard back into your home (and we’re not talking about in your little ones bedroom). We believe that the timeless chalkboard belongs in the best room in the house – the kitchen!

In the February edition of The DIY Project of the Month, we are going to show you how to make your very own Every Kitchen Menu Board that’ll look great in your kitchen.  Whether for writing up the menu for the week, jotting down a shopping list or leaving a message for your family, The Every Kitchen Menu Board is a quick and easy DIY project anyone can do.

Before you get started it is important to gather all the necessary tools and materials you will need to complete this project.

Visit your closest hardware store or stockist of Evowood products and request that they cut the pieces you will need for your project to the correct size. Then, make sure that you sand the edges of your hardboard pieces to ensure that they are smooth.

Great! You’re ready to start your project, so let’s get going.

Step 1. Painting

Step 1. Painting

Lay down the appropriate amount of newspaper and lightly spray two coats of white spray paint onto your hardboard pieces. Please ensure that you allow for the first coat to set before applying the second.

Step 2. Gluing

Step 2. Gluing

Once the paint has dried you are ready to grab your wood glue and put your project together. Place the Evosure Chalkboard face up and glue the frame directly onto it. Assemble the top of the menu board separately and glue to the rest of the menu board once it is dry. It is essential that you don’t rush and leave the glue to dry overnight.

Step 3. Hanging

Once your menu board is fully assembled, all you need to do is hang it on the wall. To do this you will need to screw two hangers into the back of the chalkboard and string a length of picture wire between the two hangers. Make sure this wire isn’t too long or your menu board may hang too low and reveal the wall fixtures behind it. Speaking of which, nail the picture hooks into the wall and hang up your very own Every Kitchen Menu Board.
