As an experienced manufacturer of engineered wood, Evowood operates a mill based in Estcourt, KwaZulu Natal.

The mill – an extensive 32 hectares (320,000m2) with 65,000m2 under roof – is strategically positioned in close proximity to two of South Africa’s largest ports (Durban and Richards Bay). This large manufacturing operation houses a wood yard, chipping operation, refining department, four hardboard production presses, a coating plant, a softboard (insulation) line and an extensive secondary fabricating facility. At its current capacity, the mill produces in the region of 30 million m2 of hardboard and softboard every year.

The production process of both hardboard and softboad at the Evowood mill is carefully monitored every step of the way, manufactured according to SANS 540 specifications. Raw timber is brought to the mill before being chipped and stored in silos. The wood chips are then used to manufacture hardboard (in the Sprout Bauer) or softboard (in the Number 4 Bauer). Once pressed, boards are cut to size using the Holzmer saw, then sanded and finished as necessary. Evowood products are available in various finishes, including primed and painted, which are applied at the mill’s coating plant. Throughout the manufacturing process, employees from the mill’s laboratory conduct quality tests to ensure that both the raw materials used and the board produced are up to standard.

In addition to being ISO9001 compliant and SABS approved, Evowood hardboard and softboard products are also manufactured with safety and eco-friendliness in mind. The manufacturing processes at the mill are formaldehyde free (using natural resins present within wood rather than the addition of synthetic bonding materials) which minimises risk both to employees and the environment. The mill is FSC Chain of Custody accredited (timber is sourced from sustainable forests) and all effluent – containing no environmentally destructive chemicals – is disposed of in a controlled manner via pumps and dams, and used to irrigate surrounding farmlands on the mill property.
